Yarnbombing in Amsterdam this Sunday

image

Fancy adding a touch of color to Amsterdam this weekend?

Every Sunday, María and other Couchsurfers go Yarnbombing around the city.

Also know as “guerilla knitting”, this is a beautiful type of street art that involves using yarn and other fibers, knitted and crocheted together, to create all sorts of colorful installations in otherwise dull environments.

"We meet on Sundays at Vondelpark where we LEARN something new each day from someone, we CREATE something with it, we SHARE our creation for a collective project (also words, food, fun…!), and then we TEACH what we’ve learnt to someone new."

Sound like fun? Check out the event page.

For the past few days I have been staying on Jaap’s couch. He is an awesome dude that my mate Brae couchsurfed with when he used to live a bit further out of Amsterdam. Nowdays he is studying and living in a crazy huge 30 bedroom student “house” just out of Central Amsterdam. Its pretty much a giant version of the Quarry back home, but with over 2 floors and with 30 bedrooms instead of 9 and covered in grafitti, art and tonnes of detailed drawings of penises from tenants past and present.
I arrived on a Sunday arvo and the house was still partying on from the night before and continued until early on monday morning. There was a DJ set up on the huge balcony, people chilling/drinking in the sun and a group of people filling up a huge inflatable pool in the yard. Everyone that I met there were pretty awesome and I ended up having some great conversations with quite a few people who were all too happy to have me crash their pad. It was a welcome change to the cold, sterile, soulless excuse for a hostel I was staying at just 5 days earlier.

This photo is part of their communal kitchen and probably the least grafittied area of the house.

This time of the year when I wanna hitchhike, this time of the year when I would rather do it with a Couchsurfer. The plan is to hitchhike to Amsterdam or Rotterdam (both cities are wicked) come back for me will be on the 26th June but we can just do the 1st way together as tickets with Euroline as £30 one way. But the fun is to hitchike baby! Who is in?
